Perranporth Golf Club - Cornwall

Perranporth was laid out by Open Champion James Braid and is quite simply one of the best links courses in Britain. In fact Senior Tour golfer Brian Waites is a regular visitor here and in his opinion this course is within the top 5 in Europe.

On arrival at the club we were informed that a Senior competition was about to start so if we were quick we could get off in front of them. As I stood on the first tee, after no warmup at all,  you could here the low rumble of golf carts and morning chatter of the approaching seniors.

Trying to ignore this I lined up my drive and prepared to launch my ball down the fairway when the worst thing possible happened, "Quite please, man on the tee". I could now feel around fifty pairs of eyes looking at me, waiting for my opening drive, which went straight down the middle of the fairway, I must admit I felt quite proud of that shot as I walked off the tee.

The staff here were very welcoming and with the wind, cliff top views and extremely fast greens this course is not for the faint hearted, but once played you will find yourself actually yearning to play it again, to try a different approach on certain holes. There are not many courses that after playing once give you the feeling of just having to go round once more.

The course is a joy to play, but I would advise you walk it first as a lot of the shots are blind, you find yourself aiming at a white post on a hill and hoping the guy who put it there knew what he was doing.
